Some minutes ago I got a message from Cajamarca. I´m not going to translate it in detail, just the main ideas:

In the end of may the campesesinos made a protest against the further expansion of Yanacocha and the contamination of water. From this day on, the yellow press started a dirty campaign against the leaders campesinos, some mayors of close villages, Marco Arana and the NGO Grufides. The "journalists" (??????) accused this people for example of promoting terrorism and violence. I know them personally and just can say that this is ridiculous.

NICE DETAILS: Directly under the articles you can see advertisments of Yanacocha.... This earning are essential for the newspaper. Furthermore the owner of the newspaper has another small company working for Yanacocha.
The newspaper in it´s dirty campaign also quotes the mayor of Cajamarca ("Mobilisation are a good business for NGOs"). He is also strong related with the gold mine.

alcalde Gómer y a la ONG GRUFIDES. Junto a los titulares de primera plana (que ya llevan tres días en estos ataques)figura la publicidad de Minera Yanacocha que es la que alienta y sostiene el amarillaje periodístico en Cajamarca. El Diario El
Clarín, cuyo dueño tiene una empresa de servicios para Yanacocha, y cuyo director
es a su vez empleado de Yanacocha en la radio local del mismo nombre, publicó
hoy en primera página las declaraciones del Alcalde provincial aprista, Emilio
Horna, atacando a la ONG GRUFIDES, acusándola de convocar al paro y promover los conflictos echando “kerosene” puesto que las ONGs viven de promover conflictos para luego aparecer como pacificadores. Este mismo argumento ha sido varias veces
utilizado por el alcalde aprista cajamarquino contra GRUFIDES. Lo que El Clarín no dice es que el alcalde aprista, es el mismo que dio las espaldas al pueblo de
Cajamarca en las protestas por la defensa del Cerro Quilish; que el alcalde
aprista es el que firmó un convenio de “fortalecimiento institucional” con la Minera Yanacocha por el cual se benefició con dinero para pagar sus estudios de maestría en una universidad española; que el alcalde aprista tiene una hermana prestando
servicios de comida y un hermano trabajando para Minera. Es claro que, salvo raras excepciones de periodistas éticos que saben distinguir el pago depublicidad del trabajo de información objetiva, la empresa con sus pagos publicitarios ha generado incondicionales seudo periodistas que se dedican a desinformary calumniar a todo aquel que tenga divergencias con la mina bajo la lógica de "no morderán la mano del que les da de comer”.

And the big question? What means Garcia for mining?

Most Peruans I spoke too, were mentioning Garcias very bad "performance" during his last time as president. And this is, what Safe Haven means:

Garcia is a populist with a political outlook that steers a course between the extremes of raw capitalism and extreme nationalism. He is a moderate leftist that is not hostile to Washington. He has promised to (...) promote workers rights, leavy a windfall profit tax on mining companies, and to oppose the ratification of the free trade agreement with the United States until a full public debate has occurred. He has also claimed that he is the only candidate that is prepared to represent the poor without a takeover of private property.

Elections in Peru... I guess - I only guess, because I´m a completely outstanding person and actually I don´t know too much about all this stuff - that the guys from Yanacocha are quite happy about the results. Humula did´t win.

During the last time all the big mining companies have been quite worried about this :

Gold prices are surging to new highs, but shares of Newmont Mining Corp. - the world's No. 2 gold producer - are lagging behind its competitors. (....)

"The main reason for Newmont being an underperformer in the sector is the Peruvian elections,"said Patrick Chidley, an analyst (...) "Ollanta Humala is running for president, and if he is elected, people think Newmont might be negatively affected."

that you invest billions of dollars and all of a sudden you find that

Newmont has around US$2bn in investment planned for Yanacocha, but its president warned that the company could cancel those plans if the investment climate was not right.

Today: election in Peru... In Cajamarca, where the big gold mine Yanacocha is located, more then 700 policemen will take care of security. The results of this election could be important for the future of the mining industry in Peru.

Some minutes ago I got a mail from friends in Peru.
On the 5 of june 2000, 6 years ago, happened the big mercury accident in Choropampa. A truck lost 151 kg of mercury and the responsible mining company paid the people to collect it from the street. This people, also children, didn´t have an idea of the danger of mercury and a lot of them still suffer from this tragedy.

According to the Mail, the people of Choropampa are still calling for justice and bether medical aid!
